The proposed Victorian ban on displaying the swastika in public is not simple and straight forward. The Nazi symbol is certainly offensive but that the laws banning it should, as discussed in the attached press release from Liberty, Victoria be appropriate and measured.
As the press release suggests, in the era of social media in particular, there also are other symbols & activities used by various groups that cannot be easily dealt with legislative means. LV suggests that “the proposed prohibition of the hakenkreuz is a band-aid solution to a much deeper societal problem resulting the re-emergence of right-wing extremism.”
It is well worth putting aside the time to carefully consider the submission.
