Jews for Refugees Meeting – Sunday the 22nd of April

In 2002 the ‘Jews for refugees’ group held a successful Pesach gathering/rally outside the Maribynong Detention Centre. It attracted over 600 Jews to protest against the mandatory detention of asylum seekers.

In 2012 there are over 4,500 asylum seekers still in detention. 500 of these are children and 250 people have been in detention for over 2 years.
We invite you to participate in a discussion about what we, as Jews, can do to oppose the horrendous treatment of asylum seekers and refugees in Australia.
Please come to a meeting on Sunday the 22nd of April at 2 pm at the Melbourne Multicultural Hub- White room, 506 Elizabeth St (Opposite the Queen Victoria Market).

In Melbourne the Broadmeadows detention centre was supposed to be converted to a low-security hostel facility for families. Instead, the start of 2012 has seen the asylum seekers in the Broadmeadows detention centre in Melbourne’s northern suburbs reach new levels of despair. Asylum seekers have been on hunger strike, have sewn their lips and attempted suicide. Even asylum seekers who have been recognised as refugees have not been given visas due to the unjustifiable, lengthy wait for ASIO security checks. Worse still, some asylum seekers will languish in indefinite limbo due to unaccountable and unappealable negative security checks.
This detention centre needs to be shut down and the asylum seekers inside need to be released into the community. The time for action is now.
